Cold + Wet = Wunderbar!!!!!!!

Alaska was a wonderful break away from the hot, high-pressure dome that seemed to attach itself to north-central Texas. This was a heat wave that brings back memories of 1954 and 1980 Texas summer. I'm a mite older, now, and I got a king-sized case of cabin fever.

Got to see some things I haven't seen since I was a child... and I appreciate them a little more, now.

I'm looking forward to seeing your images again.

Many thanks for your comments on Checking the Roof. The mountains are about 1100 feet below. That green "moss" is really pine and spruce trees. This was shot with a 35mm wide-angle lens. and a polarizer to minimize glare.

The best part of the check-out flight was trout fishing on a lake at 6000 feet surrounded by 300 ft sheer cliffs.

Hi Tom,
glad you took the "Steep Climb" and didn't get carsick!
the road runs right beneath many great mountains including the highest in the state (14,433 foot Mount Elbert), and rises well above the treeline into the stark Alpine tundra zone, while also passing lakes, rivers, steep-sided valleys, thick forests of fir and extensive aspen groves. Highway 82 is usually open for only six months of the year, from late May to late October, I appreciate your wonderful comment very much!

Sapphire Point describes the color of the lake water perfectly and is the same spot as "Chipmunk Dance" from last year The chipmunks are still there but the hilltop covered in tall firs had all been cut down due to a beetle infestation. It is a chilly Alpine lake and too cold for swimming but great for sailing. I don't think they even allow motorboats only non motorized craft..thank you for your kind words

one of my favorite landscapes of the American "Wild West". . Towering monoliths exist within a vast plateau-and-canyon panorama. You can experience sheer-walled, red rock canyons along the twists and turns of Rim Rock Drive, where you may spy bighorn sheep and soaring eagles. Most tourists go to the well known Parks but this little out of the way jewel you can explore without any crowds. Diane

Thanks Tom for looking at the logs and a history about them

Petrified trees today lie strewn across clay hills and within cliff faces; each log broken into large segments. The quartz within the petrified wood is hard and brittle, fracturing easily when subjected to stressPetrified wood found in the park and the surrounding region is made up of almost solid quartz. Each piece is like a giant crystal, often sparkling in the sunlight as if covered by glitter. The rainbow of colors is produced by impurities in the quartz, such as iron, carbon, and manganese.
Over 200 million years ago, the logs washed into an ancient river system and were buried quick enough and deep enough by massive amounts of sediment and debris also carried in the water, that oxygen was cut off and decay slowed to a process that would now take centuries

Peace in the Valley
What I like to do is look online at log cabin designs just for fun. Some of them are so beautiful! I would like one about 1500 sq ft on one level with a mountain or lake view nestled among the evergreens but not too many since I would like the cabin to be bright and cheerful in the day time. I don't like dark and deary homes. You are welcome to drop by anytime Tom!

Tom - Thank you for the fave on 'Fog on the Lake Early Morning'. This was a photo that I almost tossed, as there was reflection and glare from the train windows. But, with some work, I was able to eliminate much of it and reduce the rest to get the photo to a point that represented the view I witnessed while traveling by. Glad you enjoyed it. Thad
