I think that the votes cast in the voting booth should no longer be anonymous. I can't imagine what anyone would have to hide by being honest about their votes and that way the artist could ask the low voter exactly why they voted as they did or vice versa or not as they chose. I think we would learn something more constructive this way than in the commenting and members could share their ideas on a personal level without the scrutiny of on-lookers.

I appear to be among the group of members who vote the most and I wouldn't mind explaining my vote or voting pattern if someone asked me. I think that this aspect of image judgement passing should be open and viewable to all.

I think thats a great idea Cindy! But it might take quite a bit of time to do it that way. At least as far as the artist asking the 'why' did you give me that score part. This should be thought upon though.

Even if we don't ask the voter 'why', we at least know who is consistently giving us very low marks. It may also put an end to those undiscriminating very low votes on reasonably good images.

Thats exactly why I don't put my uploads in the voting booth anymore. Very discouraging to see some people giving 8's and some giving 0's! There's got to be a reason and the artist should know why.

"EXIF and/or Software used added to narrative area of images."

Or.. "Expanded image description area."

To include fields for;

i) EXIF data
ii) Program/software used for CGI imagery/works.

If left 'blank' ... then this area of an image's accompanying narrative will not be seen and reverts to that of only a 'narrative'.

I'm not sure where I should ask about the VB image size or if it's already been mentioned above. I'm not sure if this is an issue with my oversized monitor or a change in the VB.

Anyway, in the VB when I click on the image that I'm voting on, the image is far less than full sized. I just voted on what looked to be an average shot and gave it a 5. When I clicked on the shot I had just voted on to see who had posted it and to read the narrative, I viewed the full sized image and determined that it probably deserved as much as an 8.

I gave up on Flickr because the screen size was minimal. I don't think the photos in the VB are getting a fair shake when full screen size is not available.

Anyway, that's my opinion on the matter.

Many folks click the users name or avatar to go to the commenters home page and leave their thank yous there. Others send a PM by clicking on the word "message" below the users avatar Still others just give a cred to acknowledge the comment.
""""""""""""""""""

I would like to see a reply (button) feature added to the image discussion comments. Such that an artists reply could be made (indented?) under the comment in a way that others could see it in context. The reply could automatically appear in the commenters home page or another notification method could be devised such as a subscribed discussion notification.

I believe this would benefit every one involved. The artist would not have to leave the image page to make replies and thank yous, Others would see the artists reaction to critique and perhaps learn if they are open to critique or not. This may also reduce the counter comments coming after a critique saying " I think "X" looks just fine the way it is." etc.

Oh yes; the reply button should only be available to the owner of the image that was commented on.

Like the comments and replies Here.

Now: can some one please tell me how to condense that down to a one line option to put in the poll above? Or should I put the whole paragraph in that little box?

re "Add a aback and white gallery"

As someone who posts a lot of B&W I disagree. If anything B&W would need to be a genre, like illustration or Computer, so that it can have gallery's according to subject.

But, why? I used to feel that a B&W gallery would be useful to promote this particular art form, but now I am not so sure. Good B&W images are just as good as good colour ones. If there is a bias against B&W it comes from inside the membership and should be tackled by informing and producing great B&W images, not by being treated as a special case.

I rarely post comments on the discussion boards; frankly, the bickering that goes on, with a few seemingly wanting to dominate the topic and writing rather nasty comments about those who disagree, is disturbing. Several of the poll topics listed in this board are appalling and offensive. "The banishment of Cynlee." is the primary offensive one to me. If intended at humor, it horribly missed the mark. If intended to insult her, I'm sure it worked very well. The anonymous coward that posted it should be ashamed. I would hope that the person who posted this had the character to identify himself / herself. If among the larger egos that want to dominate the discussion threads, my comments will go unnoticed by that person, however. It is this kind of meanness that is so disturbing.

To me, the larger question is the exodus of a number of long-time members of this site. Perhaps the behavior of a few is causing a number of good people to reconsider their participation. That, ladies and gentlemen, is a shame.

Comments of those who leave seem to focus around the conduct of one or more moderators. While I appreciate their role, that these comments are sustained makes me think that there may be some validity in the words of those who leave. Only those directly involved can know for sure, but, I do wonder.

This poll, as it has evolved, is petty and without validity. That is too bad. A site for posting images and offering a variety of DT items for others should keep its primary functions in mind.

I would like to suggest a truce. I am not as self-centered as some might think and while I was very much surprised by the suggestion about removing me, I thought also of how anyone else might feel were their name inserted where mine is now. I am saddened to know that someone views me in that manner and I truly feel sorry that they are of such low character that they would write such words publicly or even think them.

My sincerest wishes were only ever that the site would prosper and we could enjoy it as much as we once did being here together , sharing our artwork as well as problems that arose in our everyday lives. Friends here can be and are very loyal and supportive of each other; most, that is, except for the sick minded ones who leave such suggestions in polls and other places, but we all know there are going to be those who spoil the situation for us all on occasion.

In the evolution of this website there has been introduced a level of suspicion and distrust between the members and the site moderators. I believe some of the problem arises from Caedes not having much of a presence or involvement with the site and from the sometimes tactless words of those in managerial positions.

The mods are human and make mistakes, but it is necessary that they also realize that we are human too and should be spoken to and of with the respect due to all human beings. Truly, it is not all of them who are less than sensitive to this, only some of them. I believe that a couple of the above suggestions should never have been made and some mechanism should exist to remove any hurtful or silly posting since comments much milder in character are removed at the drop of a period and sent to a Hall of Shame.

I am most grateful for the support my friends have shown in the situation, but I do believe that the mods hands are tied and they don't have the ability to remove those suggestions put into a poll. (I seem to have been wrong on that one).

I do get a little worked up when a friend tells me that they feel they have been treated unfairly by those in charge and my natural inclination is to come to their defense and sometimes my voice becomes a little strident and I don't mince words. That is in my nature and we can't all be Pollyannas, I guess. Please forgive me. It would behoove me to try to be more delicate in commenting on any problem that exists, but I am not going to cast aspersions or throw stones at people who live in glass houses. Everyone can look at their own faults and choose, or not, to deal with them.

I am saddened every time I hear that one of my friends or acquaintances is leaving the site because of some misunderstanding or altercation with a mod. Maybe it is as the cliche states, "Familiarity breeds contempt" or else like people who blast each other with their car horns because they are encased in a steel capsule and can remain semi-anonymous, people on web pages say things they wouldn't to your face because they are hiding behind a computer monitor. I don't really know the cause and I don't really have an answer.

Addendum: I see that the offending suggestion has recently been removed (by Caedes?)

I've just voted on the option 'Remove the option about Cindy or I will leave this site forever.'

Image Mod's are able to reject images wich aren't in compliance with the COC. Image Mod's are able to send given comments to the 'Hall of shame'. Therefore they should get the possibility to reject (in advance) negative poll items, like personal attacks on members, as well.

Cornelius.

Edit: see now that the personal attack item is removed. See too that Geri's (*Caedes) last visit to the site was on December 5th, 2011. So I'm curious who, in spite of the information above, was still capable of rejecting this poll item.

Cindy ... As far as removing a vote from a poll feature ... I know it cannot be done by itself / alone once a member has voted for a specific feature. The only way to remove the vote from a specific feature is to select another feature & then click vote. This will remove your previous vote & your new vote will then be counted in the poll.

I found this out when I changed my vote on a contest topic & it also works in the polls as well.

Hope this helps & answers your question. I'm sure the mods will be able to explain it better.

Try hovering your cursor over any one option/suggestion's vote total bar.. to get the total number of votes per option/suggestion.

Right now, I can tell that there are five votes and two votes for the respective suggestions in place.

Unless, you are saying that with only one option up.. that functionality does not work?

The scoring system for the images. Where are the changes? I don't see anything different!! Where's this voting thing at??

Oh, ok.

When I wrote/posted;

"It's baaaaaack..

(*points up*)

"Re-introduce a scoring system for images." "

I was simply referring to the suggestion being put back up on the poll to be voted on.

Not, that the function had returned to the site as yet.

And..

A discussion thread is in place for discussion/suggestions on how to improve the old C-Index.. here. If you are interested.

'Modify image entry into contest!'

...(given that these contests seem to hold so much importance here!).. I propose that a person be allowed to enter her/his image immediately after uploading it, prior to acceptance by a moderator... with the knowledge that should the image be rejected by the moderator accepting/rejecting the images, the entry of the image into the contest would be null and void. In my mind that would solve the problem of having the image accepted prior to the deadline and then entered into the contest by the poster again prior to the deadline. How about it Geri?! ☺ Have you got the programming fingers warmed-up? :o)

This, I believe, would set things up so the poster knows that he/she is too late or NOT! The voting notifications could come out some 12-24 hours (or whatever) after the termination of a contest entry period to give time for the moderator during that time period to do her/his work.  ☺

Phil, it is not really old as the Poll suggestions are ever- changing. Quote from *caedes' introductory post viewable in the hidden overflow messages
"old recommendations will be automatically removed from the poll in order to keep it up-to-date"

The poll maybe fresh Lyn but the original thread is still musty, there are some very interesting comments to read in the overflow mode.

Re: Contest Changes (option now up as of this writing)

1) Increase the time frame for the Contests.. from that of the current twelve (12) days.. to that of three (3) weeks.

2) Change/edit the header info for the Contest Topic Poll page to include:

"Try to keep in mind, when suggesting a topic:

i) Open to all genres of art. Not just photography.
ii) Add a short description (one or two lines is sufficient) , so 'we' know what the artistic aim/intention of the subject matter is.
iii) Try not to repeat previous topics.
"

re: Contest changes iii)

Dating back to 2009 there have been 96 (if I counted correctly) contests. I don't see that it would matter all that much of some were repeated.
Looking back at the entries in earlier contests there are very many names that are now unfamiliar on the site - and there are many new members here since then who may appreciate some of the excellent topics already used before.

Just finished PM'ing a member.. and I recalled a suggestion above that was germane to our PMs.

This:

"EXIF and/or Software used added to narrative area of images."

Or.. "Expanded image description area."

To include fields for;

i) EXIF data
ii) Program/software used for CGI imagery/works.

If left 'blank' ... then this area of an image's accompanying narrative will not be seen and reverts to that of only a 'narrative'.

Added back as suggestion above.

I have a great suggestion! How about when issuing Creds, you place a drop down menu where you can choose the quantity of creds given instead of repeatedly clicking the + icon. Also, a method to "choose all messages" especially when deleting notices of someone liking your comments, etc.

I would like to second the 'choose all messages' sugestion. I believe it has been suggested in the past with no result - it really would be most helpful :)
Sorry :) I do not agree with the creds drop down menu - why not just award 1 cred each time - it gets the message across just as well as half a dozen.

Re: Choose all messages.

"Also, a method to "choose all messages" especially when deleting notices of someone liking your comments, etc."

I am pretty sure, that.. after a period of time the notifications (found under "Jobs" in the side menus) do expire all by their lonesome.. no user input/action required.

I don't have a suitable present entry for the current contest available (an image that can be or is uploaded to Caedes after this contest was been started), and it's doubtful whether I can go for a photo shoot within the available time to achieve a proper entry.
In that case there won't be a contribution from my side. I suppose that other Caedes members had (in the past) or have (nowadays) a comparable situation.
If a member had the possibility to enter an approved post from his or her complete gallery, the situation would be different and possibly even more attractive.
I suppose that changing the criteria will take 'some' (please notice the quotes) effort from 'Caedes' (Gerald), but that might be not that complicated because a list of selectable images already can be found by checking-out the link 'Caedes Control' at the left column on the Caedes main page.
It might be even easier by not using the 'limited time frame' within an image has to be posted, in stead of using it.
Think and hope too that it will stimulate the Caedes-members for participating in future contests.

If I may, Cornelius.. add that as an option above at the top of this page. Else it looks like there has been no activity on this discussion thread for the most part.

Type in your idea/suggestion in the field provided beside "Add an option =>".. click on the empty circle/checkmark "o".. click on "Vote" and done.

(/\ Might have to check the above steps, as it's been a while since I've done similarly and I am seriously under caffeinated at the moment.)

It should then appear afterward for anyone else to add their vote to your suggestion.
